Arctic Open 2026: All-Malaysian derby and a seeded upset mark Day 1

Malaysia's mixed doubles contingent had a mixed start to the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 Arctic Open, splitting results on the opening day of qualifying and round-of-32 action at Vantaan Energia Areena.

Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien fell in straight games, 15-21, 18-21, to fifth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui of China, while national number eight seeds Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai suffered the day's biggest upset, going down in three tight games, 27-25, 18-21, 15-21, to England's Samuel Jones and Lizzie Tolman.

There was better news elsewhere in the draw. Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin eased past Sweden's Oscar Reuterhall and Nathalie Wang 21-12, 21-16, while an all-Malaysian clash went the way of Chen Tang Jie and Chan Wen Tse, who beat compatriots Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing 21-15, 21-16 to advance at their teammates' expense.

The results leave Malaysia with two wins from four mixed doubles matches on Tuesday as the Arctic Open.
