French Open 2026: Goh-Izzuddin and Tai-Yap Survive Three-Game Scares
Four Malaysian entries in singles and mixed doubles fall in straight games on opening day
Malaysia's men's doubles pairs carried the flag on the opening day of the Yonex French Open on Tuesday. Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin and Aaron Tai/Yap Roy King both came through three-game Round of 32 matches, while all four Malaysian entries in the other disciplines lost in straight games at the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 event.
Sixth seeds Goh and Izzuddin beat Denmark's Christian Faust Kjær and Rasmus Kjær 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 in 51 minutes, according to Free Malaysia Today.
The Malaysians took the opening game and dropped the second, then had to fight from behind in the decider after the Danes built a comfortable lead, before rallying to close it out. It was the first meeting between the two pairs, the same Danish duo who knocked out Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun at the Denmark Open last week.
Goh and Izzuddin have won titles at the Indonesia Open and Indonesia Masters this season, according to the BWF World Tour record.
Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King beat the United States' Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith 21-18, 18-21, 21-12. The Malaysians took the first game, lost the second, then pulled away in the decider.
The pair, who won the Arctic Open this season, sit in the same section of the draw as top seeds Kim Won-ho/Seo Seung-jae, so a meeting with the top seeds looms in the Round of 16 if the seeds advance.
In mixed doubles, Jimmy Wong/Cheng Su Yin lost 20-22, 18-21 to Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah after narrowly missing out in the first game. Wong Tien Ci/Lim Chiew Sien went down 12-21, 10-21 to Chinese Taipei's Wu Guan Xun/Lee Chia Hsin.
In men's singles, Leong Jun Hao lost 15-21, 11-21 to Japan's Koki Watanabe.
In women's singles, K. Letshanaa pushed Thailand's eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong to 23-21 in the first game before losing it, then went down 15-21 in the second.
